The Department of Religion is seeking to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning in Fall 2024 in Comparative Theology.

The Department of Religion is Seton Hall's home for the study of religion, theology, and ethics in global, comparative, and ecumenical contexts. Animated by Vatican Council II's call for Catholic Christians and all persons of good will to examine the relationship between faith and reason, engage one another in solidarity, and promote the common good, the Department of Religion's curriculum focuses on the theological, cultural, and ethical dimensions of Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christianity and other global religious traditions, particularly, Judaism, Islam, and South Asian religions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This tenure-track faculty member will be expected to publish original scholarship and teach in the field of comparative religion and theology, preferably with specific attention to Islamic and/or Hindu or Buddhist religion and theology. Teaching responsibilities consist of a 3/3 load that includes regular offerings of “Religions of the World” as part of the College core curriculum in addition to upper-level courses that put Christian faith and thought in dialogue with other religious traditions. Such courses include “Pluralism in Multireligious America” and “Islamic and Christian Perspectives on Faith.” The faculty member will also have opportunity and encouragement to create innovative and appealing new courses that challenge students to examine contemporary and enduring questions and problems through the context of comparative religion. We seek someone who will add to the robust scholarly profile of the Department and effectively communicate the interest, relevance, and value of comparative religion to students across fields.

Required Qualifications:

Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent by the date of hire.

Desired Qualifications:

Particularly desirable candidates would show potential for high-quality research and teaching in the areas of interreligious dialogue and religious pluralism, especially Roman Catholic theological traditions in relation to Islam, Hinduism, and/or Buddhism.
