Seton Hall University, an archdiocesan Catholic institution founded in 1856, invites applications for a full-time tenure track professor at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences to start Fall 2024, pending final budgetary approval.

The Department of Biological Sciences is undergoing rapid growth and seeks to develop coursework and research in environmental sciences and related fields.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will develop a research program that involves both undergraduate and graduate students and can be externally funded. The position includes teaching biology major required courses, ecology focused courses, as well as graduate courses within their area of expertise. Faculty are also expected to mentor Graduate students’ research; offer experiential research opportunities with advising to undergraduate students; and provide services to the department, college, and university.

More specifically, the hire would be expected to (1) run a core biology courses & support the biology majors in all sciences; (2) increase the variety of upper-level bio-electives by offering new courses such as Sustainable Agriculture and Habitat Restoration or Environmental Toxicology and participate in the ongoing creation of academic programs in Environmental Science; (3) assist with educating, managing, mentoring, and advising the increased number of biology majors; (4) provide a computational based research space for undergrads and graduate students; (5) assist with all the day today activities that are important to a functional department; and (6), just as importantly, the faculty member will participate in innovative, collaborative program development in interdisciplinary STEM fields as part of our “STEM Initiative.” This concentration will provide student support for occupations in “Green Fields” including environmental engineering, conservation scientists, and urban planning.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Environmental Sciences or related fields (Ecology, Marine Biology, Plant Biology, Botany, Geology, Earth Science). Preferred candidates would have 2yrs of relevant postdoctoral training, a strong publication record, and previous teaching experience at the college level. (ABDs will be considered)

Desired Qualifications:

Applicants will be expected to establish and sustain an energetic, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will mentor graduate student research/projects and offer experiential research opportunities to undergraduate students.



The candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate students. Courses will include general biology major courses, upper-level biology major electives, as well as graduate courses in his/her area of expertise.

They will engage in service for the department, college, and university, including, but not limited to, committee work and undergraduate student advising.
