The New Jersey State Bar Foundation (NJSBF) Clinical Teaching Fellowship is designed to launch the teaching careers of practitioners with at least 3-5 years of practice experience, but applicants with less experience will be reviewed. Preference will be given to applicants with 5 years of more of experience. The fellow will have the opportunity to co-teach with an experienced clinician and to participate in supervision rounds and discussions of clinical pedagogy with other clinical teaching fellows. The fellow also will be mentored in pursuit of a career in legal educations. The Seton Hall Law School Center for Social Justice seeks to hire a teaching fellow, starting on or about early September 2026 with flexibility to start at a later date. The fellow will be hired for 1 year, with the possibility of continuation for an additional 1 or 2 years.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The NJSBF Clinical Teaching Fellow will assist Professor Isis Misdary, Director of the Criminal Defense and Community Advocacy Clinic, with the full-year clinic. The fellow will co-supervise students with Professor Misdary and develop and assist with teaching the seminar component of the clinic. The fellow will also be expected to manage a docket of cases, movement lawyering projects, and advocacy reports during semester breaks, the winter intercession, and the summer.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include a J.D. degree and membership in good standing of the Bar of any state, with the opportunity to apply for admission to New Jersey; minimum 1 year of legal practice experience in criminal law with a preference for 3 years or more; and the potential for teaching excellence. The ideal candidate will be committed to a legal empowerment and community-directed practice model.

Desired Qualifications:

Preference for individuals with experience representing young people and with felony trials.
Preference for individuals admitted to practice in New Jersey.

Licenses and Certificates:

J.D. degree and membership in good standing of the Bar of any state, with the opportunity to apply for admission to New Jersey.

Salary Range:

$72,000- $99,000

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume/CV, list of at least 3 references, unofficial law school transcript, and writing sample. In the cover letter, please discuss one problem or challenge you have observed in criminal defense practice and how you would address it. Your references must include at least one individual who can address your skill level with criminal defense practice, including your level of readiness to represent young people on felony charges. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
