The Assistant Director of Public Safety supports a departmental mission to protect life and property. He is primarily responsible for the investigation of all incidents on the main campus and collaborates with law enforcement to address issues of mutual concern both on and off campus. Conducts crime prevention programs for campus constituencies. Is responsible for maintaining investigative files, crime logs, evidence and property control, compiling data for the Campus Crime Report and preparing crime alerts. Works closely with Student Life and Housing and Residence Life to address disciplinary issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Investigations
• Investigate all reported incidents on campus. Interviews victims, witnesses and suspects. Secures statements and identifies potential evidence. Coordinates with different departments and divisions within University
• Responds to crime scenes to collect, preserve and document evidence. Maintains chain of custody. Identifies and locates witnesses.
• Coordinates the investigation of suspected criminal acts with law enforcement while ensuring the security of protected information from unauthorized release.
• Generates investigative reports for the Public Safety database. Protects evidence for forensic examination by law enforcement.
• Performs reagent testing of suspected drugs found on campus.
• Reviews audio, video and card access records to identify potential suspects and to develop and support investigative information.
• Collaborates with law enforcement to investigate incidents of mutual concern at off campus locations.
• Conducts confidential in-house investigations for departments and divisions within the University
• Testifies in court and in administrative hearings.
• Identifies and notifies persons of their persona non grata status. Disseminates information throughout the University.
• Participates in investigations related to complaints of sexual harassment with the Compliance Office and Human Resources.
2. Crime Prevention Programming/Training
• Produces a crime log to ensure compliance with the Student’s Right to Know Report
• Produces a weekly crime log for publication in the Setonian
• Produces Crime Alerts based on the analysis of trends that pose an ongoing threat to the University community.
• Collaborates with outside agencies, including the New Jersey Department of Corrections, New Jersey State Attorney General’s Office, local and state law enforcement and other departments within the Student Services, to bring programming to campus to address important issues and educate the student body.
• Identifies crime trends by analyzing available data and adjusts patrol and prevention strategies to address emerging issues.
• Provides for the installation of door tags in offices and residence halls to alert individuals to recent thefts in their areas.
• Conducts site surveys and makes specific recommendations to address security issues.
3. Disciplinary Process
• Work closely with Student Services in the investigation of student misconduct.
• Assists Housing and Residence Life in the investigation of incidents in and about the residence halls.
• Obtains information relative to incidents occurring off campus that impact the disciplinary process.
• Provides Student Services with reports, statements and evidence related to disciplinary issues related to Title IX, EEO, HR and Legal
4. Maintaining files
• Prepares, distributes and updates the persona non grata list within the University.
• Updates the campus restriction lists as needed.
• Maintains the online lost and found property log. Manages the storage and return of property
• Collects crime incident data from local law enforcement and from within the University maintaining files for the annual Clery report.
• Maintains investigative and report files.
• Maintains a crime log for public review in the Dispatchers Office.
• Works with Asst Dir Clery & Systems classifying crimes
• Back up to Clery
5. Inter-departmental Collaboration
• Provides inter-departmental training for new Housing and Residence life employees
• Collaborates with people from across the University community to support the Catholic Mission of the University by collecting eyeglasses to be donated to New Eyes for the Needy.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree or have 15+ years Law Enforcement, Military, or Private Sector security experience. Must be able to understand and operate all of the University computer systems within the scope of the Department

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of New Jersey Criminal Code and Federal statutes relating to reporting and student rights. Techniques of interviewing and investigation. Crime prevention and supervision of Public Safety and law enforcement personnel.
The ability to evaluate evidence including, physical and circumstantial evidence and that obtained through the interview process. Review of statistical data to identify crime trends and adjust strategy.
Develop and administer crime prevention programs and initiatives. Coordinate investigations process.

Licenses and Certificates:

Valid New Jersey license to operate all Public Safety vehicles.

Salary Range:

54,400 - 74,800

Exempt/Nonexempt: Exempt
