The Deputy Director reports directly to the Director of Public Safety. They are responsible for assisting the Director in providing for the overall safety and security of the Seton Hall Community. The Deputy Director monitors and supervises the daily operations of the department and ensures all policies and procedures are carried out in a manner consistent with the University Mission. Assists in the coordination of activities with other University Departments and completes special assignments at the direction of the Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Direct and coordinate the daily operations of the Department
• Review Manager, Dispatcher, and Public Safety Officer work performance; make recommendations to the Director for remedial training, job performance counseling or disciplinary action.
• Ensure all the Director’s directives, policies and procedures for the protection of life and property are adhered to in the manner they were intended.
• Be accessible 24/7 to the Managers, Dispatchers, and Contract Guard Service Manager as well as for emergencies, policy guidance, and notifications.
• Oversee all Public Safety projects
• Interviews and makes recommendations for hire; new employees for the department
2. At the direction and with the approval of the Public Safety Director, develop clear and consistent policies and procedures for departmental operations as well as reviewing and revising existing policies as needed.
• Create all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
• Formulate and review technology strategies for implementing fire and safety initiatives that are efficient and cost effective.
• Monitor safety and security trends and make recommendations that will allow the Department to adjust to these
• Primary Emergency Notification Messenger
3. Coordinate with the Associate Director for Fire Safety and Security Systems in the development of fire safety systems, intrusion and silent alert alarm policy.
• Create policies and procedures for fire system identification and operations.
4. Act as the liaison with other University Department for special projects involving the safety of the community.
Supervises Asst Dir of SHU Law School, monitors daily operations.
Supervises Asst Dir of OEM programs and training
Oversees Asst Dir of Investigations
Supervises Asst Dir of Administrative Services as well as Security Training Manager
5. Monitor and control the operations of the Lenel Security System.
• Consult with the Asst. Director of Card Access on security related Lenel issues.
6. Public Safety liaison for Parking Services
• Work with Parking Manager to develop new policies to improve parking, track and adjudicate violation offenses.
• Develop strategies to increase the use of our Online parking application.

Required Qualifications:

Have 20+ years of Law Enforcement, Military, or Private Sector security experience at command level and higher supervision experience.
Must be able to understand and operate all the University computer systems within the work scope of the Department.

Desired Qualifications:

Ability to assess problems, arrive at solutions and assign staff to resolve
Ability to define project, assign personnel and bring to successful resolution

Licenses and Certificates:

Valid New Jersey license to operate all Public Safety vehicles

Salary Range:

85,500 - 114,000

Special Instructions to Applicants:

On call required. The on-call point person for the Department all calls go to the Deputy Director and then are routed to the appropriate Administrator, or outside agent.
Evening, holiday or weekend work required during emergencies and special events.
