Maintains the grounds, removes snow, and controls ice on campus. Supervisor is the Leadperson for the Grounds Shop.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains the appearance of the campus. Cuts the grass, prunes the trees and bushes, weeds the gardens and lawns, waters the new lawns and flowers and fertilizes areas. Rakes leaves or blows them.

Picks up trash and debris in assigned area either by hand, vacuum, sweeper, pole, or power blower.

Shovels, sweeps, or plows snow and controls ice

Repairs and maintains sprinkler systems.

Lifts heavy loads frequently (50 – 80 lb. bags of fertilizer or ice melt).

Operates variety of power tools and equipment (backhoe, street sweeper, mower, trimmer, chain saw, vacuum, ditch-witch, leaf and snow blowers).

Moves furniture and equipment when required. Maintains tools so they are clean, operable, and stored properly. Repairs and maintains fences, benches, and trash containers.


Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans up work area after completion of job. Maintains tools so they are clean, operable, and properly stored.

Works off ladders to install lights and to prune trees and bushes.

Power washes walks and entrances to buildings.

Performs other assigned tasks.

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma
Possesses spray operator’s license.
Reads, writes, and can follow directions.
Possesses valid NJ driver’s license.
Must obtain a DOT medical certificate to operate Grounds vehicles.

Has experience and skills operating power tools and equipment, such as sit-upon mower, snow blower, snow plow, weed wacker, backpack blower, and walk behind mowers.

Has a minimum of two (2) years experience with grounds keeping or related job.

Is physically sound and capable of extended, strenuous outside work (such as snow shoveling, raking, and digging).

Desired Qualifications:

Has knowledge of plants, insects, diseases common to this areas. Knowledge of fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides and application of these chemicals.
