The College of Human Development, Culture, and Media (CHDCM) at Seton Hall University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of Hip-Hop Studies with a focus in one of the College's four Academic Departments, including: (1) Educational Studies, (2) Education Leadership, Management & Policy, (3) Communication, Media and Arts, or (4) Professional Psychology & Family Therapy. The position will begin in August 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will have a background commensurate with one of the CHDCM's Academic Departments with demonstrated record of quality, rigorous, practical, and community-based research drawing upon the lens and literature of Hip-Hop Studies. As a new innovative faculty line, candidates’ areas of expertise, teaching, and research background will determine which of the CHDCM's academic departments they may be housed within. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in establishing robust collaborations across Hip-Hop Studies curricula both within the CHDCM and across the University. Through these interdisciplinary partnerships, the ideal candidate is expected to create a holistic educational experience that blends cultural studies, artistic expression, and critical media literacy with practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
The college seeks applicants with a central commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Ideal candidates, using established and/or emerging theoretical and methodological frameworks, will connect DEI expertise to Hip-Hop Studies and Educational Studies, Education Leadership, Management & Policy, Communication, Media and Arts, or Professional Psychology & Family Therapy. The candidate should have a terminal degree in education or a related field (e.g., psychology, communication, cultural studies). We invite candidates with expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods resear ch. Expertise in and experience with critical and creative methods is encouraged. A key role of this position will be to support the development of an interdisciplinary Hip-Hop Studies Program. As a result, the candidate will be expected to collaborate across the college and university to create course offerings that will exist as part of the newly developed Hip-Hop Studies Program.
This successful applicant will be expected to conduct research, teach courses as assigned, engage in department, college, and university service, and advise students. The department chairperson may assign additional duties when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

Required qualifications include:
• An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a field of education, psychology, communication, or other related field of study.
• A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
• A demonstrated record of or potential for publishing practical/community-based research in the field of hip-hop studies
• A demonstrated record of or potential for quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• A demonstrated ability to work/collaborate across academic departments

• Evidence of successfully designing, conducting, and publishing research
• Evidence of innovative teaching practices and successfully designing interdisciplinary courses
• Experience in leadership roles
• Experience mentoring doctoral dissertations
• Experience teaching in nontraditional environments (online and hybrid)
• Experience with grant writing and funding
• Evidence of experience of fieldwork specified to discipline (e.g., clinical work)
• Demonstrated expertise in interdisciplinary critical and creative methodologies, including (but not limited to) arts-based methods, autoethnography, community-based participatory research, and digital humanities.
