The Clinical Teaching Fellowship/Practitioner-in-Residence position with the Immigrants' Rights/International Human Rights Clinic is designed to launch the teaching career of a practitioner with at least three to five years of practice experience. The position provides a unique opportunity to engage in clinical teaching and supervision while also litigating detained immigration cases. The fellow/practitioner will represent detained clients in immigration and federal court litigation and have the opportunity to co-teach with an experienced
clinician. The fellow/practitioner also will be mentored in pursuit of scholarship interests and goals. The fellow/practitioner will be hired for 1 year, with the expectation of continuation for an additional 1 or 2 years (dependent on grant funding).
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Teaching Fellow/Practitioner-in-Residence will assist Professor Lori Nessel, director of the Immigrants' Rights Clinic. During the first year, the fellow will co-supervise students with Professor Nessel and assist with teaching the seminar component of the clinics. The fellow will also be expected to manage a small docket of detained immigration and federal court cases, and to provide coverage for the clinic docket over the summer
and winter breaks.
Required Qualifications:
Must have at least 3 years of legal practice experience and demonstrate potential for teaching excellence.
Desired Qualifications:
Preference for legal experience in New Jersey and in substantive areas related to the clinic’s work, including immigration, federal court litigation, and civil rights.
Licenses and Certificates:
J.D. degree and membership in good standing of the Bar of any state, with the opportunity to apply for admission to New Jersey.
Salary Range:
$92,000 - $115,000
