Reporting directly to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Associate Dean for STEM and Research will advance grantsmanship across disciplines, student recruitment and retention at the undergraduate and graduate levels, steward academic program development and differentiation, improve and expand experiential learning opportunities, and facilitate student success in the STEM fields of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Associate Dean will also advance faculty research in the College across all fields of inquiry, including the humanities, the social sciences, as well as the STEM fields. The successful candidate will promote competitive external grant funding by aligning faculty with funding opportunities and facilitating proposal submissions. More generally, the Associate Dean will collaborate on strategic initiatives, special projects, faculty recruitment, personnel matters and other endeavors as assigned by the Dean.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean will typically teach one course per semester in his or her field. Other responsibilities include:
• Proactively align significant funding opportunities with faculty research and provide the encouragement, assistance, and resources necessary to ensure faculty submit competitive proposals.
• Proactively work with STEM Department Chairs and faculty to strategically differentiate and strengthen academic programs and experiential learning opportunities; to promote collaboration between Departments, including (1) the STEM Initiative investments in applied science and engineering between the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics in the areas of applied computing and informatics, cybersecurity, electrical, systems, materials, bio, and chemical engineering, sensors, sustainability, and environmental science, and (2) intentional integrations of STEM with humanities and social sciences.
• Work creatively with STEM Department Chairs and faculty to improve student learning and success, particularly in high-volume courses.
• Work with STEM Department Chairs and faculty to develop new academic programs.
• Oversee STEM Connect events and other initiatives to promote the STEM community, improve STEM alumni and donor engagement, and facilitate STEM faculty development.
• Coordinate with the Pre-Professional Advising Center and others to support the pre-med programs and related matters.
• Address ad-hoc student concerns in the STEM fields that rise above the Department level on matters such as advising, registration, scheduling and grading.
• Collaborate with STEM Chairs and Associate Dean for Finance to ensure appropriate lab fees and equipment updates.
• Provide information, data and reports as needed.
• Promote STEM and College initiatives at Open Houses and other recruitment events and on social media;
Other duties as reasonably assigned by the Dean.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate or an equivalent terminal degree in a STEM field, a record of funded research and teaching excellence, and the academic credentials for a tenured professorial appointment in one of the College’s departments at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
Desired Qualifications:
Applicants should have a record of academic administrative experience and will have served in a leadership position such as assistant dean, department chairperson, or program director. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop partnerships and work constructively and collegially with faculty, administrators, and staff throughout the University.
