Seton Hall University seeks a candidate to serve as our Provost and Executive Vice President. Reporting directly to the President, the Provost serves as the University’s chief academic officer and is entrusted with advancing academic excellence, ensuring alignment with our Catholic identity and mission, strengthening research and scholarly achievement in line with our R2 designation, supporting shared governance, fostering faculty and student success, and providing strategic leadership and vision to the academic enterprise.
Candidates must possess the vision, integrity, collaborative leadership and the experience necessary to guide the University through a rapidly evolving higher education landscape while remaining faithful to the values and traditions of our Catholic identity and mission.
The provost works collaboratively with faculty, deans, the priest community, administrators, students, board members, alumni, external partners and cabinet counterparts to ensure that Seton Hall continues to flourish as a distinguished leader in Catholic higher education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A successful candidate should demonstrate expertise and acumen in the following areas:
Academic Vision, Strategy & Leadership
The provost provides overall leadership for the University's academic enterprise and is responsible for developing and implementing a forward-looking academic vision aligned with the University's strategic plan, Catholic identity and mission, and institutional priorities as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
• Leading comprehensive academic planning, program development, assessment, and policy implementation to advance institutional priorities and strengthen academic effectiveness.
• Ensuring academic quality, rigor, innovation, and continuous improvement across all colleges, schools, and programs and ensuring we provide exceptional undergraduate, graduate, and professional educational experiences for our students.
• Guiding accreditation, regulatory compliance, and accountability efforts to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence.
• Setting the University's academic strategy and priorities in partnership with faculty and deans, fostering interdisciplinarity and collaboration among faculty.
• Stimulating the development, implementation, and evaluation of long-range academic plans that advance transformative student learning, research, innovation, community engagement, Catholic identity and mission, and institutional sustainability.
• Facilitating the development of innovative academic programs and strategic partnerships that respond to evolving student, workforce, societal, and global needs.
• In partnership with the Chief Information Officer, providing the academic vision and faculty leadership necessary to advance the digital transformation of teaching, learning, and academic operations - including leading the University's academic response to artificial intelligence, championing learning analytics and data-informed advising, and articulating the academic requirements for technology investments that enhance the teacher-scholar relationship central to Seton Hall's identity
• Refining and advancing the University's academic vision through the expansion of new academic initiatives, partnerships, and other opportunities that strengthen the institution's academic reputation and impact.
• Advising the President on matters relating to the University's academic mission, priorities, and operations.
Catholic Identity & Mission
As the chief academic steward of a Catholic university and a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark, the provost ensures that the University's Catholic identity and mission (as outlined in Seton Hall: A Catholic University) remain vitally present and operative components of academic life as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
• Promoting the four essential characteristics of a Catholic university as described in Ex corde Ecclesiae (13) across all colleges, schools, and programs
• Championing the Catholic intellectual tradition and supporting the integration of faith and reason throughout the curriculum, giving harmonious witness to the unity of all truth.
• Fostering respectful thoughtful dialogue, ethical leadership, academic freedom, and intellectual inquiry consistent with our Catholic identity and mission.
• Creating a culture grounded in the dignity of every person as created in the image and likeness of God and care for the whole student, enabling students to thrive academically, grow personally and spiritually, and discover lives of greater purpose, meaning and servant leadership.
• Supporting relationships with the University Priest Community and the Archdiocese of Newark in the preservation and promotion of our Catholic identity and mission and serving as a faithful steward of the Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, in preparing future priests for effective ministry.
• Partnering with the Vice President for Mission and Ministry, Student Affairs, and other mission-oriented campus partners to cultivate a campus culture of belonging, welcoming and hospitality where care for the poor and marginalized are prioritized through academic programs in line with Catholic social teaching and our understanding of the dignity of the human person.
• Working collaboratively with the President and Executive Cabinet to embody the principles of servant leadership and acting for the greater good of our community, students and Catholic identity and mission.
Academic Operations & Financial Resource Management
The provost provides oversight for the operations of Academic Affairs, including the colleges, schools, libraries, academic support functions, institutional research, graduate enrollment, registrar, study abroad, and other academic units as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
• Supervising and developing academic deans, associate provosts, and other senior academic leaders and fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and innovation across the academic enterprise.
• Overseeing the financial resources of Academic Affairs, including budget management, stewardship of endowed funds, fiscal responsibility, strategic resource allocation, and long-range budget and enrollment planning in support of the University's mission and institutional priorities.
• Recruiting, developing, and supporting outstanding faculty by promoting excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activity, professional formation, and faculty-led innovation.
• Providing strategic oversight and leadership for the Office of the Registrar, ensuring security, data integrity and regulatory compliance as well as working to leverage the registrar as a strategic asset in collaboration with academic units to advance academic planning and forecasting.
• Leveraging data-informed analysis and institutional effectiveness measures to support academic planning, strategic decision-making, and the continuous improvement of programs, services, and student outcomes.
• Ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and University policies while overseeing regional accreditation, specialized program accreditations, assessment activities, and academic program review processes.
• Developing and implementing academic policies, assessment frameworks, and quality assurance practices that advance institutional effectiveness and promote continuous academic improvement.
• Overseeing graduate affairs across all colleges to drive enrollment, optimize discount rates, maximize net revenue, and improve retention and partner with relevant stakeholders to deliver support services that foster graduate student belonging and success.
Faculty Affairs and Shared Governance
The provost serves as the University's principal academic leader for faculty matters and promotes effective shared governance as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
• Understanding of faculty affairs and a deep appreciation for the principles and practices of shared governance that are essential to successful university leadership.
• Overseeing faculty recruitment, retention, development, promotion, tenure, and recognition.
• Supporting excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activity, and service.
• Maintaining strong relationships and regular communications with faculty senate and other governance bodies.
• Advocating for faculty resources and creating an environment where faculty can thrive as teachers and scholars.
• Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, programs, colleges, schools, and academic support units.
Teaching, Research, Scholarship & Hands-on Learning
In line with our Great Minds, Greater Purpose strategic plan, the provost will support transformational, hands-on learning experiences through support of research, scholarship, innovation, programing and partnerships while enhancing Seton Hall's strong commitment to teaching and student success as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
- Promoting excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and innovation across the University and creating opportunities for students to engage in research and scholarly inquiry alongside faculty as part of a transformative educational experience.
- Advancing strategies that enhance research productivity, expand sponsored research and external funding opportunities, and elevate the University's reputation as an R2 research institution.
- Encouraging the development of faculty-led, high-impact experiential learning opportunities that connect theory to practice, extend learning beyond the classroom, and deepen student engagement.
- Expanding opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to participate in research, internships, clinical experiences, service-learning, study abroad, and other high-impact, experiential learning activities.
- Strengthening collaborations with industry, healthcare, community, governmental, and educational partners that enrich the academic experience and create meaningful opportunities for students and faculty.
- Integrating technology and emerging educational practices into the learning environment in ways that enhance teaching effectiveness, student learning, and academic innovation.
- Encouraging innovation in pedagogy, curriculum design, and program delivery to meet the evolving needs of students, employers, society, and the Church.
Institutional Leadership, Collaboration, Communication and External Engagement
As a member of the Cabinet, the provost plays a central role in external and University-wide leadership as indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
- Working closely with Student Affairs, Finance, Enrollment Management, Advancement, Athletics, Mission and Ministry, and other Cabinet counterparts to ensure collaboration and synergy.
- Partnering with the Vice President for Enrollment Management to ensure that academic program development, new program launches, and program review processes are informed by enrollment trends, market demands, and workforce data - so the academic portfolio remains attractive and relevant to prospective students.
- Cultivating meaningful relationships with donors, alumni, board members, corporations and foundations in partnership with Advancement, to secure philanthropic support for academic priorities, expand institutional resources, and advance strategic initiatives.
- Working with the Vice President for Student Affairs to support student success and persistence and providing strategic partnership on support services, such as tutoring, advising, and career development.
- Representing the academic interests of the University by working with governing board committees, the Faculty Senate, and by making periodic reports to the Board of Regents and the Board of Trustees.
- Ensuring the implementation of Seton Hall’s Strategic Plan in collaboration with faculty, deans and cabinet counterparts.
- Representing Seton Hall with academic associations, accrediting agencies, governmental organizations, church leaders, donors, and external partners.
- Building partnerships with educational institutions, industry, healthcare, nonprofit, and educational organizations.
- Serving as an ambassador for the institution regionally, nationally, and internationally.
- Representing the president and University at regional and national conferences and meetings and events on and off campus. • Creating an environment that encourages excellence, service, and innovation among faculty and programs.
Required Qualifications:
• Doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrates a clear understanding and personal appreciation for our Catholic identity and mission and the expectations of the role considering our Catholic diocesan tradition.
• A minimum of at least 12-15 years of experience in higher education.
• Distinguished teaching, scholarship and academic achievement sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor.
• Demonstrated success in strategic planning, academic administration, and organizational leadership.
• Knowledge of accreditation, assessment, and higher education regulatory environments.
• Experience managing budgets, personnel, and complex institutional initiatives.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and collaborative leadership skills.
Desired Qualifications:
• Priority for candidates currently employed at Seton Hall University.
• Priority given to candidates with significant experience in progressively responsible academic leadership positions, such as service as department chair, dean, associate dean, provost, associate provost or similar senior academic role.
Salary Range:
$450,000-$550,000 per year
