General Maintenance Mechanic

Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs in selected buildings. The majority of the work will be with the electrical and plumbing systems, but the mechanic must be proficient in the general techniques of all common trades. This position is mainly located at Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, NJ but will assist at Gateway Center location in Newark, NJ and South Orange Campus when administration requires support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Repairs and replaces faucets, sinks, urinals, toilets, pumps, valves, water lines and unclogs sanitary drains. Conducts wall repair and painting. Prepares estimates and bills of materials for tasks. Orders material for the tasks. Assists with repairs to kitchen equipment.

Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, panels, and fixtures using hand tools and electrical testing equipment. Re-lamps lighting fixtures, replaces lens covers, and replaces batteries in smoke detectors. Assists with boiler operation and change over.

Repairs and replaces blinds and ceiling tiles. Mounts pictures, bulletin boards, plaques, and clocks. Assists with moving furniture and office contents when required. Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans up all work areas after completion of the tasks.

Performs all work with adherence to safety procedures. Inspects completed work and ensures that work conforms with requirements of local building and safety codes.

Performs all work through an automated work order system and then documents the hours and material expended. Reports all deficiencies beyond their responsibility on work orders for other trades.

Routinely lifts material weighing more than 20 pounds. Works off ladders and scaffolding frequently.

During the heating season this position will work from 3 to 11:30 M-F and be part of an OT rotation with two other Local 68 members every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) from approximately October to May (start and end day contingent on beginning and end of boiler usage).

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma/ Local 68 Apprenticeship Graduate or attendee
Possess Type I CFC certificate/Possess valid NJ driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

Has knowledge of all common trades and can apply this to maintenance and repair.
Black Seal License.

Salary Range:

$43.05 per hour

Exempt/Nonexempt: Nonexempt
