The Division of Academic Affairs at Seton Hall University is hiring a Director of Undergraduate Mock Trial for the 2024-25 academic year. The American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Undergraduate Mock Trial Team at Seton Hall is comprised of students of various disciplines of study who compete in regional and national mock trial competitions in the Fall and Spring semesters. In recent years the team has grown in size and has enjoyed a host of accolades including qualification for Nationals and ranking among top tier institutions across the country.
The Director will report to the University Director of Experiential Learning. The Director should have significant trial and/or mock trial experience. The position will require approximately 6-8 hours per week during each 13-week semester. Stipend will be paid monthly over the academic year. All interested parties should submit a cover letter and resume to be considered for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director’s responsibilities will include:

1. Conducting an internal annual recruitment and selection competition.
2. Training students in the trial skills needed to compete; instructing students in trial advocacy techniques including, but not limited to, writing and performing opening statements, direct examinations, cross-examinations, and closing arguments, and making and responding to objections; teaching students the AMTA Rules of Evidence and legal principles and procedures associated with both criminal and civil cases; working with students to develop case themes, theories, and strategies.
3. Coaching and traveling with a team each semester.
4. Hiring/training/directing assistant coaches to assist in preparing students for competitions.
5. Working with assistant coaches to select competitions and competitors.
6. Maintaining current content of social media outlet(s) such as LinkedIn, Instagram, SHU Blog, etc.
7. Establish and maintain a framework for governance and procedures including the selection of a student chair position and provide oversight to the student director throughout the year
8. Creating synergies with the Alumni, Seton Hall University School of Law, Advancement, and Seton Hall University pre-law, and other relevant collaborators in strategic development.
9. Maintaining team budget in collaboration with the Director of Experiential Learning/Office of the Provost, oversight of travel arrangements, reimbursements, fundraising initiatives, etc.
10. Consult and collaborate with faculty advisor to ensure adherence to University policies and procedures.
11. Supporting alignment with curricular opportunities in Pre-Law studies in collaboration with Pre-Law advisement
12. Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

1) Experience coaching and/or competing with an undergraduate Mock Trial program
and/or
2) Experience teaching at the undergraduate level

Desired Qualifications:

1) Applicants must have outstanding communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with students, staff, and administration to achieve desired outcomes for the teams and program. Successful applicants must possess current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology)e.g. word processing, email, database management, etc.)
2) Applicants with JD or other relevant advanced degree preferred
