Responsibilities:

  • This work-study employee will have responsibility for monitoring use of the seminary library on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. At 10 AM you should unlock the staff office and turn on the lights in that room, take the guest register from the office and put it on its stand in the lobby. Tell any patrons who are waiting for admission to the Reading Room to wait while you prepare that room. Then unlock the door to the Reading Room and turn on the lights in that room. Next, turn on the copier machine in the Reading Room and check to see that it has sufficient copy paper. After completing your tasks in the Reading Room, go back to admit the waiting patrons. Once you have admitted them, go to see if there are any returned books in the drop box located across from the circulation desk in the seminary library lobby. Bring those books to the circulation desk and mark them in the computer as returned, then put them on a cart so that they can be re-shelved. Once these jobs are done, your principal responsibility for the time remaining until closing at 4 PM is to staff the circulation desk and answer the occasional call that might come into one of the phones in the staff room. To "staff the circulation desk" you must sit at the circulation desk and greet each person who comes to use the library, admit to the reading room only those people who correspond to the access policy and check out library materials only for those patrons who qualify for lending privileges. Copies of the Seminary Library's Access and Lending Policy are always available on one of the shelves of the metal stand that supports the guest register. You must acquaint yourself with this policy statement and give a copy to anyone who does not understand why you cannot allow him or her admission to the library or anyone whom you cannot allow to take out library materials. If someone is not a Seton Hall faculty or student, ask that person to sign the guest register (be sure they supply all the information asked for in the register). In brief: the seminary library is open to all registered students, faculty and other members of the academic community of the Seminary. Seton Hall undergraduate and graduate students, in order to be admitted to the Reading Room, must present a library pass obtained at the Walsh Library circulation or reference desk. Seton Hall professors need only present their ID cards. Students in the Jewish-Christian Studies program do not need a library pass. A list of these students is available at the circulation desk. Always ask for an Identification Card if you do not know the patron. Besides monitoring admission to the Reading Room, you must also assist patrons with checking library materials in or out and you must collect fines for library materials that are returned beyond their due date. When checking books in or out, if you find the label with shelf number on the spine is loose, please tape it securely. At lunchtime you may go to the kitchen behind the priests' dining room and get a tray of food to bring down to the Staff Room. At 3:50 PM, announce to the patrons in the Reading Room that the library will be closing in ten minutes. When all patrons have left and you have checked out library materials for them, return to the Reading Room and turn off the copier machine and turn off the lights. Finally, lock the Reading Room and then turn off the lights in the Staff Room and lock the doors to the Staff Room.

Qualifications:

  • All work-study employees must have knowledge of Access Policy.
