Director, First Generation Forward (Gen 1) Program

This position is responsible for the overall administration of New Jersey state-funded student programs -- the First Generation Forward (Gen 1 ) Program through the Opportunity Meets Innovation (OMI) Grant, which is designed to help first-generation, Pell-eligible students. This includes the supervision, including hiring responsibilities, for the staff of graduate interns. Familiarity with grant writing and report writing is crucial. This is a highly visible position on campus and in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and monitor the First Gen Forward (Gen 1) OMI grant funds from the state of New Jersey. Work with Office of Financial Aid to allocate state grant monies (book voucher) to qualified First Gen Forward (Gen 1) students.
  • Supervise all phases of the administration of the First Gen Forward (Gen 1) OMI grant, including overseeing responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the program. Responsible for assessment of program metrics, including retention and completion rates, academic standing, and academic support utilization - primarily through Compass/ Banner reports.
  • Represent the university at OMI state meetings and represent First Gen Forward (Gen 1) Program on university committees and task forces, including the First Gen Forward Committee. Help to lead retention efforts in Council for Student Success for Strategic Goal 3.
  • Oversee staff hiring and conduct staff evaluations. Partner with the Academic Resource Center (ARC) regarding coaching, mentoring, workshops, tutoring, and supplemental workshops.
  • Coordinate the marketing and recruitment of the program for incoming students with University admissions, Center for Academic Success and ARC. Coordinate orientation, mid-year and end of year programming for First Gen Forward (Gen 1) students.
  • Develop policies and procedures for First Gen Forward (Gen 1); implement goals and monitor compliance with both state regulations and university policy. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree required in education or related field. 5-8 years of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of programs and experience with students in the economically/educationally disadvantaged area is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Oral (e.g., one-on-one presentations): Must be able to give public addresses, meet with prospective students as part of recruiting efforts and represent the university to the outside community. Written (e.g., press releases, completing forms): Must be able to submit state report documentation in a timely manner, write reports for both the university and the external audiences.
