The College of Communication and the Arts at Seton Hall University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Media Studies (Tenure-Track) starting in August 2020. We seek a Media Studies scholar with expertise in the critical study of Sports Media.

The appointed candidate will join a Visual and Sound Media program that emphasizes both media studies and media production, and that will be seeing a $1.8 million upgrade to its production facilities in the coming months. Moreover, the appointed candidate will participate in a new and growing Sports Media minor that has quickly become the largest minor within the College of Communication and the Arts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities include teaching assigned courses (3-3 teaching load) in the Visual and Sound Media program; conducting impactful research and publishing scholarly work related to media; advising Visual and Sound Media students across several concentrations and minor(s); and contributing to program development, curricular innovation, and coordination. Faculty are also expected to be active members of the College of Communication and the Arts and the broader University Community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in media studies or a related field (degree completion by August 2020); we invite applicants with a range of humanistic/critical approaches to the study of media.
  • Two or more years of successful college-level teaching experience.
  • Evidence that the candidate will have a successful publication record commensurate with tenure at an R2 institution.
  • The ability to regularly teach across the Visual and Sound Media curriculum in existing undergraduate classes such as but not limited to: Introduction to Media Studies, Electronic Age in America (a course about the history of radio and television), Evolution of Film Art, Digital Media Studies, and Senior Seminar.
  • The ability to regularly teach across the Sports Media minor curriculum in existing undergraduate classes such as but not limited to: Introduction to Sports Media, and Sports, Media, and Culture.
  • The ability to create new undergraduate media studies courses on topics related to the candidate’s area of expertise, with the potential opportunity to also create courses on the graduate level in the future
  • A commitment to collaborating in growing a new, interdisciplinary sports media program

Desired Qualifications:

  • Scholarship that engages media and critical race studies or media and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies – with particular attention to the sports media field.
  • Experience and knowledge of media production.
