Seton Hall Upward Bound Program is a unique educational experience that uses Federal funding to offer a variety of academic, social, and cultural activities, as well as personal and career counseling for first-generation, limited-income high school students in Newark, East Orange, and Irvington, New Jersey. The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to assist and prepare high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds to aspire for post-secondary education and beyond.

College employees acknowledge their obligation to model and teach the three R’s to influence student development of behaviors that will lead to academic, professional, and personal success.
Assessment: contributes to assessment for continuous quality improvement of the academic support for high school students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop curriculum and lesson plans, course objectives that are aligned for grades 9th through 11th in keeping with the programs’ educational philosophy.
- Prepare weekly/biweekly lesson plans utilizing textbook materials, supplemental instructional materials, audio, and visual aids, etc. to meet students’ needs.
- Differentiate lessons when needed to give all students access to the curriculum regardless of instructional level, or level of interest in the subject.
- Responsible for using the written word to express ideas or tell a story. Create content using various multimedia formats that can be read, listened to, or viewed onscreen.
- Teach and guide students in improving reading and writing skills.
- Teach students using project-based learning, lecture and demonstration, audiovisual aids, and other materials to supplement instruction.
- Provide pre and posts exams for students to improve their writing skills.
- Evaluate students through the utilization of teacher-made tests, standardized tests, and observations.
- Provide behavioral and academic intervention for students
- Provide individual help to students to maintain continuous and satisfactory progress.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Maintains attendance roster for all students.
- Record grades and submit individual Student Assessments at the end of the semester.
- Confer with Upward Bound Administrators and Advocates regularly about students’ performances in the class.
- Participate in professional development activities such as in-service and professional development opportunities
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university required.
- New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate, Certificate of Eligibility (CE), or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS).
- Possession of a current and valid teaching certificate in the appropriate subject/content area issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
- A minimum of two (2) years teaching, preferably in urban or limited-income settings
- A collaborative attitude towards teaching and learning.
- Experience working with Federal TRIO Programs and underserved populations (limited-income, first-generation students) preferred.
- Possess an acceptance of diversity, a desire to assist students, and maintain a positive attitude.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in education preferred
