Seton Hall Upward Bound Program is a unique educational experience that uses Federal funding to offer a variety of academic, social, and cultural activities, as well as personal and career coaching for first-generation, limited-income high school students in Newark, East Orange, and Irvington, New Jersey. The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to assist and prepare high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to aspire for post-secondary education and beyond. Personal Touch: Respect, Responsiveness, and Responsibility in all professional relationships, specifically, employee to student, employee to employee, and employee to the community. College employees acknowledge their obligation to model and teach the three R’s to influence student development of behaviors that will lead to academic, professional, and personal success. Assessment contributes to assessment for continuous quality improvement of the academic support for high school students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ability to relate to students from various backgrounds a) educationally and economically challenged b) limited income and first-generation.
• Use professional ethics and judgment to implement goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the academic year and summer components and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
• Assist students with completing assessment instruments, scoring, and discussing the results.
• Facilitate a daily discussion group with a designated student peer group. Each discussion group is to be led using a lesson plan crafted appropriately for the grade level of the peer group.
• Works in collaboration with and serves as the conduit between the student and parent, the student and the instructional staff, and the student and the administrative staff.
• Responsible for an intake interview and final assessment of each student in their peer group.
• Responsible for tracking attendance and communicating with parents via phone calls and emails during Saturday Academies and summer
• Establish a non-threatening including learning environment for participants.
• Supervise students during any group outings
• Mediation of any behavior concerning students to ensure their safety and well-being.
• Provide advising services including but not limited to personal problem-solving, academic advisement, building positive peer support, enhancing communication skills, career planning, academic skill-building
• Assist with college research, admissions process, and financial aid, career advisement
• Submit supplies and materials request related to lesson plans
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in the field of social services or education required
• Must have experience in counseling, academic advising, and advocacy
• Experience working with high school students
• Must have experience preparing lesson plans
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Work experience in a social service environment with at-risk, and culturally diverse high school students (teaching/tutoring and/or mentoring)
• Demonstrated knowledge and abilities through two years of professional experience in student support areas
• Possess strong organizational skills
• Experience working with Federal TRIO Programs is a plus
