The Department of Physical Therapy at Seton Hall University is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Department Chair. This person will guide the full-time core and adjunct faculty in meeting the department’s mission to produce autonomous healthcare professionals, who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages with medical problems or other health-related conditions, illnesses, or injuries that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities as well as they would like in their daily lives.

The Department of Physical Therapy is composed of 12 diverse core doctoral faculty, who lead a newly revised 3-year, full-time DPT curriculum that prepares entry-level clinicians to become autonomous practitioners of physical therapy and movement specialists. The academic and clinical coursework emphasizes the application of theory and research to practice, with emphasis on inter- and intra-professional team collaboration. The Department is housed in the School of Health and Medical Sciences located at the Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus in Nutley, NJ. These new learning spaces and laboratories enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge and hands-on skills to enter a variety of practice settings while the purpose-built motion capture and research spaces support faculty scholarship especially in the areas of biomechanics, interventions and patient care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • We are looking for an individual with a strong educational leadership background and senior faculty status who is skilled in physical therapy patient/client management and able to contribute to university and community based inter-professional collaboration initiatives.
  • This replacement line can benefit both the DPT program and the School. Faculty scholarship that address the movement system and evidence-based care could develop as part of the IPP collaborations between other SHMS and University departments as well as with community partners. SHMS already created an excellent research laboratory space on the IHS campus for individuals with lines of inquiry relating to biomechanics, interventions and patient care. The Chair also participates in the SHMS ALC. This individual will have a shared voice in the expansion and enhances of our School.
  • We are asking to fill this replacement line with a person who can manage departmental functions but also provide the vision and mentorship for newer faculty and the many adjuncts who serve as instructors. This leader must be able to lead core faculty member to meet teaching, scholarship and service expectations and to achieve the expected program outcomes through student advising and mentorship, admissions activities, educational administration, curriculum development, instructional design, coordination of the activities of the associated faculty, coordination of the clinical education program, governance, clinical practice, and evaluation of expected student outcomes and other program outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • The essential functions are to lead the Department of Physical Therapy and work collaborative with the other Chairs as well as the members of the Office of the Dean within the School of Health and Medical Sciences.
  • This faculty hire must meet CAPTE standards, especially 4G qualifications. These include: a.) is a physical therapist who holds an active, un-restricted PT license in any United States jurisdiction and the state where the program is located if required by that state’s jurisdiction.; b.) has an earned academic doctoral degree or previous CAPTE-granted exemption; c.) holds the rank of associate professor, professor, clinical associate professor, or clinical professor; and d.) has a minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience, with a minimum of three years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a CAPTE ac-credited entry-level physical therapist education program.

Desired Qualifications:

  • a physical therapist who holds or is eligible for an active, unrestricted PT license in New Jersey
  • has an earned academic doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, EdD, etc.)
  • eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor
  • has a minimum of six (6) years of full-time higher education experience, with a minimum of three years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a CAPTE accredited entry-level physical therapist education program
  • has academic administration experience in higher education, with a working knowledge of curriculum standards, faculty development, budgetary management, and CAPTE accreditation standards / processes.
  • has excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
