The Career Advisor (Assistant Director) supports the career education, internship and post-graduation goals for undergraduate students and the career transition needs of alumni in the School of Business. Facilitates and supports students’ preparation for and obtainment of internships and professional employment. (90% of Stillman students utilize Career Center resources and 75% obtain Internships). This position supports/monitors approximately 100 internships each year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Students/Alumni: Responsible for career education and work preparation of a specific student cluster. Facilitates career self-exploration and preparation processes to guide students through goal setting and achieving internship and full-time roles. Works with students to help them understand their personal worth and how they can add value to organizations based on previous life experiences. May also employ career assessments for students and alumni in preparation for internships and their post-graduate pursuits (i.e., professional employment and graduate school). Provides career assistance to Stillman alumni (1 – 10 years out). The focus of this position has a major concentration on Accounting students.
- Employer/Alumni Development: Conducts extensive outreach to employers to source internship and professional opportunities for students. Coordinates with the planning of recruiting/ networking events/ on-campus recruiting for students, alumni and employers. Conducts meetings or site-visits with internship employers to monitor partnership and learning experiences of students. Participates or manages two major Career fairs, networking events and other small events such as employer information sessions. Supports the On-Campus Interview Program and identifies employers that hire candidates for specific student academic concentrations. Conducts development with the alumni community to identify mentors for the Pirate Mentor Program and industry experts to present at or participate in various career programs or networking events.
- Career Education/ Presentations: Develops/presents career education seminars to build communications competencies for students as they pursue internships, full-time roles or graduate school. These include: written communication (resume and cover letter), oral communication (interviewing), interpersonal communication (networking), and digital communication (social media).
- Project Management & Administrative Tasks: Supports/monitors internships (approximately100 per year) and recruitment cycle for specific academic concentrations. Responsible for end-of year reporting on student engagement including career advising appointments, student application volume and attendance at career events. Supports the on-going maintenance needs of the Career Center’s Web site.
- Supervision/Leadership: Manages projects and processes such as events and on-campus recruitment.
- Technology: Provides leadership for internal systems such as Handshake, Compass and Microsoft systems such as SharePoint and Teams.
- Event Planning & Promotion/ Evaluation: Coordinates/plans recruiting and networking events for students, alumni and employers. Develops promotional materials and distributes via print, electronic and social media to the University-community, employers and alumni.
- Assessment/Evaluation: Develops assessment and evaluation tools.
- Faculty: Conducts regular outreach and communication with faculty. Works closely with faculty internship advisors.
- Bachelor's Degree
- Background in Business: A minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in career counseling/ career development/ internships. Prior corporate experience also highly desired and preferred to be effective with School of Business students and alumni.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills to work with employers, faculty, administration, alumni, students.
- Maser's degree preferred unless candidate has a background in accounting, finance or HR
- Strong analytical skills required. Must be able to plan and organize projects up to six months in advance. Must be able to analyze and compile data.
- Must be able to work in teams as well as autonomously. Ability to lead department initiatives and work directly with campus members on various collaborations. Ability to manage multiple tasks and constituencies
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Microsoft SharePoint, Teams, Publisher and Access a plus.
