As the Associate Dean for the College of Communication and the Arts, the incumbent is a full-time administrator appointed by the Dean and is charged with providing leadership, strategic vision and inspiration across the College and among all stakeholders. The candidate will primarily oversee undergraduate students, faculty, and related administrators and staff. Congruent with University and College mission and disciplinary best practices, the candidate must develop and promote excellence and integrity for the College by identifying and facilitating program development - both internally within the College and potential interdisciplinary partnerships.

As a member of the Dean’s Executive Cabinet, the Associate Dean will work with and support the Dean in the strategic planning of the College and seek to operationalize critical initiatives. The incumbent will function as an ambassador on behalf of the College with a variety of constituents, including alumni, parents, students, community leaders, donors, and professional colleagues. Additionally, the incumbent is required to provide a presence at recurring and ad-hoc events, cultural activities, and serve on various elevated University- and College-level committees and task forces.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Associate Dean of the College's undergraduate students by managing/directing all aspects of student matriculation, progression, and graduation certification of all students. The incumbent will provide administrative leadership and supervision for undergraduate students, including oversight of faculty- and professional-academic advisement of all undergraduate students.
  • Administer the University and College codes of conduct and associated academic integrity policies, including adjudication of grade appeals/grievances. Meet with students and provide support, solutions, and/or referrals, as appropriate. Serve as liaison to parents/guardians, families, and/or designated contact of students, in alignment with FERPA guidelines. In collaboration with the CASE Director, develop advising protocols for interdisciplinary and undecided students.
  • Represent the College with several campus partners, including but not limited to Undergraduate Admissions, Advancement, Freshmen Studies, Career Center, and Student Services.
  • Responsible for leadership and direction of ongoing exploration and implementation associated with the effective use of resources to enhance the student experience across the College, with foci on mission, achievement/success, retention, and outcomes. Develop and administer database to track and provide recurring and ad-hoc analyses related to student outcomes, including persistence, internships, job placements, and the like, and identify connections with future recruitment tactics.
  • Lead all career services efforts on behalf of the College, including serving as liaison with the University's Career Center. Implement and continually assess standardization and oversight of all experiential learning opportunities (including, but not limited to internships, study abroad/away, faculty exchange, etc.) in collaboration with program faculty. Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
  • Oversee all College assemblies for undergraduate students including, but not limited to annual convocation, award ceremonies, inductions, and other large-scale events/programs throughout the calendar year. Advise College-level student groups, including but not limited to student boards, class councils, leadership groups, programs, and related initiatives. Conduct presentations of varying scales on behalf of the College. Coordinate prospective student and/or counselor visits, including off-campus opportunities for recruitment and/or advancement cultivation.
  • Supervision of administrators and staff in curricular and co-curricular units, including CASE Director, TV Studio, WSOU Radio Station, and Theater.
  • Facilitate ongoing curriculum development among the faculty, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations including internally and with other Schools and Colleges (both within the University and externally, including the exploration and execution of international partnerships, in alignment with the Dean's vision). The incumbent should identify opportunities and collaborate with faculty to integrate innovative and technologically advanced programs, in multiple modalities, coincident with discipline-specific best practices, market demand, and future vision.
  • Function as chief administrator for several strategic initiatives, including, but not limited to, identifying, recommending, and implementing faculty development workshops as part of Dean's Connection standing program, undergraduate student scholarship selection and administration, online course development request review, Dean's List, academic standing reviews and notification, and the like.
  • Provide leadership in, and take responsibility for, the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and regulations. In collaboration with the faculty, lead the process to develop, establish and administer an ongoing Professionals-in-Residence program and associated policy.
  • Explore, in collaboration with the faculty, potential opportunities for interdisciplinary Communication and the Arts seminars that demonstrate and embody the College's portfolio of academic disciplines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • 5-8 years of demonstrated excellence in higher education administration.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related field, preferred.
