The Gallery Assistant works under the Gallery Director on various projects involving the careful handling and documenting of historical artefacts and art objects for inventory, research, and exhibition purposes. The Gallery Assistant also assists and monitors visitors to the Gallery, as well as manages calls to the front desk.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Undertake an ongoing inventory project for the Gallery Director which entails careful physical inspection, handling and documentation of historical artefacts and art objects, and other Gallery duties as assigned; maintain and enhance the quality standards of records and materials handling and storage for research and preservation purposes; work as part of a team and across units maintaining good working relationships; technology projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts in related field of study (Art/Art History preferred);
  • 1-3 years minimum related work experience; art handling, accessioning and condition reporting; basic knowledge of the tools of/for exhibition installation;basic digital imaging/Photoshop; PastPerfect or other art/museum system (LibApps a plus).
  • The ability to operate technical equipment such as a scanner, digital camera, general tool use; computer (PC required, Mac a plus), fax, copier, digitization equipment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to maintain communications and workflow across functions in the Gallery and with Special Collections and Library-wide, and to assist with written work produced by the Gallery.
  • Ability to travel throughout campus to catalogue the University’s collections; climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally may be required to work weekends for art deliveries, Gallery openings, emergencies w/collections or exhibits, special projects and programs, exhibition installation.
