The Lab Manager will oversee operations in the anatomical lab facilities for the SOM and SHMS at The Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus. The Lab Manager will be responsible for lab scheduling and maintenance, cadaver embalming and pathology specimen maintenance, health and safety compliance, set up and break down of the lab for teaching activities and assistance with lab technology. The lab manager will also assist the Director of the Anatomical Gift Program (AGP), liaising directly with anatomical donors and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs job duties in a teaching laboratory environment under the supervision of anatomy faculty members and the Director of the Anatomical Gift Program in implementing and monitoring laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Counsels anatomical donors and their families related to anatomical donation.
  • Performs anatomical embalming/maintain cadavers and care for pathology specimens.
  • Arranges for collection and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Files and maintains all permits and reports related to anatomical donation (e.g., transfer permits, compliance documents) as required by state and federal law.
  • Ensures lab operations are effective, efficient and lab users comply with all established procedures.
  • Oversees the anatomy lab by setting up for teaching labs and keeping it clean and safe for students and faculty.
  • Ensures that anatomical specimens, skeletal material and teaching tools are appropriate for each lab, as directed by faculty, and that the equipment and instruments are clean and in working condition.
  • Provides faculty and the AGP Director with technical/clerical support in budgeting, ordering supplies, anatomical specimens and equipment.
  • Provides basic technical assistance to faculty and students during lab sessions.
  • Supports faculty in organizing and proctoring anatomy lab exams.
  • Maintains an inventory of anatomical specimens, supplies and teaching tools and works closely with the IT staff related to computer software and hardware needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid NJ State Funeral Director’s License or ability to transfer valid license from different state.
  • 3-5 years experience in anatomical embalming and maintenance of anatomical specimens.
  • Familiarity and ability to comply with State and Federal standards related to laboratory safety and cadaver handling.
  • Experience counseling families, especially regarding anatomical donation.
  • Excellent communication and administrative skills.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational and planning, team-building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with database management and creating reports.
  • Willingness to be on call 365/24/7 to take calls from anatomical donors and families.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Previous experience working in a medical school, health science school, educational or medical setting
  • Excellent record-keeping skills, enthusiasm, high standards of cleanliness

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Valid NJ Funeral Director's License or ability to transfer valid license from different state.

Physical Demands:

  • Working extensively with cadavers and anatomical specimens, and moving, lifting and/or transporting items that may weigh up to 100 lbs.
