The Associate Director of Clinical Skills will assist in the development, implementation, evaluation, and enhancement of the School of Medicine’s clinical skills curriculum, in close collaboration with the SOM leadership. This includes integrated three-year competency based clinical skills training and assessment, including assessment of the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for undergraduate medical education.

The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of Clinical Skills, Associate Dean of Medical Education, Course and Clerkship Directors, and faculty members to develop curricula that include classroom, simulation, and clinical-setting based educational experiences. The Associate Director will also assist in the development and implementation of multi-station high stakes Block OSCE Examinations, which will occur at least 4 times throughout the 3-year core curriculum. These assessments will utilize standardized patients as well as high fidelity and task-based simulation, and will take place in our brand-new simulation centers. The Associate Director will also participate in the support and remediation of students with clinical skills deficits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In the pre-clerkship phase, the clinical skills curriculum will be part of the integrated Sciences/Skills/Reasoning Courses, which integrate content from the Biomedical, Behavioral, Social, and Health Systems sciences. The classroom based elements of the pre-clerkship curriculum will utilize active learning techniques, including Team-based and Problem-based Learning. All curricular elements will link to the Human Dimension– a 3-year course in which pairs of students are linked to families in the community, follow them over time, bringing to life the many determinants of health, and whenever possible providing benefit to those families and communities.
  • The Associate Director of Clinical Skills will assist in the development of a clinical skills program that has the tremendous advantages of robust and advanced classroom and clinical settings. The School of Medicine will be co-located with the Seton Hall University College of Nursing and School of Health and Medical Sciences. The brand new interprofessional Health Campus includes a 9,500 square foot standardized patient simulation center and a 9,500 square foot inpatient simulation center, and will be the ideal setting for the development of interprofessional training curricula. Clinical sites will come from the Hackensack Meridian Health Network – an integrated health network that includes 13 hospitals and more than 200 ambulatory care centers, fitness and wellness centers, home health services, rehab centers, and skilled nursing centers spanning from Bergen to Atlantic counties in New Jersey.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO) with specialization in relevant clinical field
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in an undergraduate medical education (UME) and/or other medical education settings
  • Excellent communication, administration, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated scholarship (e.g., presentations, publications, patents, extramural grant-funding, etc.) in a relevant professional field, preferably medical education research
  • Documented ability to mentor and motivate students and peers
  • Ability to practice clinical medicine in the state of New Jersey

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced training in medical education
  • Demonstrated ability in leading the development and implementation of clinical skills curricula in the UME or other medical education setting
  • Experience in LCME accreditation activities and development of new medical schools

Licenses and Certificates:

  • M.D. or D.O., ability to practice clinical medicine in NJ.
