The Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (SOM) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within its faculty, staff, and student body. The SOM is seeking an Associate Dean of Faculty who will be responsible for providing broad administrative support and office coordination to the Faculty of the SOM and will serve as the first point of contact for inquiries from faculty. Duties will be of a sensitive and confidential nature and will require the ability to communicate in a highly professional manner with faculty, university leadership, and external contacts. The individual will provide support related to the implementation of strategic and operational priorities, to include: support of the SOM’s Vision and Mission; newly developed and existing policies and procedures; curriculum support as it relates to faculty affairs, in coordination with the Associate Dean of Medical Education; faculty on-boarding, appointments, evaluations, committees, and events; detailed tracking of faculty-related data and applicable data analysis; and regular monitoring of institutional and federal regulation compliance matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conceptual and developmental - In collaboration with the SOM and Seton Hall University (SHU) leadership:

  • Provide leadership, vision, and oversight for programs aimed at enhancing open and mission driven faculty recruitment, satisfaction, retention, and mission-aligned growth within the school
  • Develop, implement, and assess faculty development programs across all missions and departments in the school
  • Support faculty to develop to their fullest potential while meeting institutional mission goals for faculty and national accreditation requirements
  • Advise faculty and medical school and department leadership on SHU and Hackensack Meridian Health policies relating to faculty.
  • Ensure that these processes add value and are structured efficiently
  • Assure that the Faculty Guide and Faculty Bylaws are updated as necessary and adhered to
  • Oversee faculty recruitment, retention, appointment, evaluation, and promotion, merit, sabbatical, professional development, leave, and awards and recognition activities
  • Provide oversight and further development of strategic plans and goals

Promote innovation including

  • Develop policies highlighting a new emphasis on interdisciplinary and "team" teaching and research
  • Develop and implement faculty training in support of the goals of the Human DImension
  • Develop policies that give a broader definition of scholarship that includes contributions through non-traditional media, as well as entrepreneurial advances and engagement.

Managerial

  • Oversee and direct the Office of Faculty and Assistant Dean of Faculty, Resident, and Student Development as well as other staff of the Office of Faculty
  • Manage the appointment process for all faculty, including assurance of the appropriate level of appointment
  • Participate in budget development and management
  • Oversee chair and departmental reviews
  • In collaboration with Department Chairs and Directors, manage/balance faculty workloads, faculty development, clinical and academic workloads
  • Manage the promotions process
  • Oversee faculty annual appraisals
  • Oversee special reviews
  • Organize chair and other senior administrator searches and other high-level committees
  • Manage faculty governance processes
  • Provide guidance to the Faculty Assembly and standing committees/members
  • Assist, as appropriate and set forth in the Faculty Guide, in faculty grievance issues
  • Facilitate access to training and compliance requirements
  • Administer conflict of interest, disclosure, and review policies

Correspondence

  • Develop and author correspondence for the Dean regarding policies, procedures, offers, appointments, etc.
  • Maintain and disseminate the Faculty Guide, Faculty Bylaws, and faculty-related section of the SOM website (e.g. updates, etc.)
  • Draft faculty appointment letters, and manage related communications as appropriate
  • Draft job postings and posting-related advertisement

Onboarding and Compliance

  • Assist in the logistics of populating faculty/chair search committees, as set forth in the Faculty Guide
  • Manage applicant files and applicant screening processes
  • Lead Faculty Orientation
  • Maintain faculty database, and assure that its information is accurate and complete
  • Monitor faculty satisfaction, workload, and mission-alignment
  • Regularly monitor HMH/SHU and federal regulation compliance matters (e.g. COI, IRB, etc.)

Required Qualifications:

  • Possess an MD and/or PhD degree or equivalent terminal degree,
  • Extensive experience developing and mentoring medical school faculty, (minimum 10 years’ experience)
  • Demonstrated success developing and assessing complex medical school programs with attention to positive outcomes
  • An understanding of trends in medical education, research, continuing professional development, and faculty development
  • Experience interacting with medical school, university, and health care administrators at the highest level in complex organizations

Desired Qualifications:

  • National reputation in faculty development and/or education practice and theory
  • Ability to build and engage in a clinical, research, or education program in area of specialty
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, problem-solving capabilities, collaborative and participative team building skills, effective and respectful interpersonal communication and a commitment to quality and service.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, and have proven ability to work with diverse teams of inter-professional learners, staff, and faculty.
  • Understanding of accreditation requirements for medical schools, with expertise in LCME, GME and/or CME level accreditation requirements
