|
Seton Hall’s Upward Bound Program is a unique educational experience that combines State, Federal and private funding to offer a variety of academic, social and cultural activities, as well as personal and career counseling for first generation, low-income high school students in Newark, East Orange, and Irvington, New Jersey. The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to assist and prepare high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds to aspire for post-secondary education and beyond.
We are seeking individuals to provide academic and social support to "at risk" students from the Upward Bound Program, which will increase their academic performance and preparation for post-secondary education. The Upward Bound Program serves under served youth who have significant barriers to academic success, yet show an interest in overcoming these barriers and succeeding academically. Individualized tutor/mentoring will help scholars understand the college going process, learn about major/career options, how to set goals and identify concrete steps anchored in their daily lives to reach them. Tutors/Mentors will commit to supporting, guiding, and being a mentor and friend to scholars for the spring semester, but mentors and mentees are encouraged to continue relationship as scholars progress through high school and after high school graduation. The program hope that mentors can help scholars develop and reach positive academic, career and personal goals, offering guidance around non-cognitive skills such as study skills, organization, and self-advocacy etc.
